Sustainable Investing

Since 1997, we have invested with the conviction that how a company treats its workers, its communities and the environment can reveal how well it is run.

We build that into our research, shape each portfolio around what our clients care about, and use our clients’ rights as shareholders to press companies to address risks and improve their practices.

ESG integration:

part of our research

We examine environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues alongside balance sheets, cash flow and valuation to understand risks and opportunities that financial statements alone may not reveal.

  • Can it attract and retain employees?

  • Does it uphold labor standards in its supply chain?

  • How is it preparing for climate change or water scarcity

  • Does its board provide effective oversight?

We look at what these answers mean for the company’s financial health and long-term value.

Investment screening:

setting the standards

We apply screens early in our investment process to avoid business activities and practices we consider harmful, including fossil fuel extraction and production, weapons, tobacco, private prisons and predatory lending. We also examine companies’ records on environmental protection, human rights and the treatment of employees, customers and communities.

We apply our default screens unless clients specify their own. Clients can add restrictions or exclude individual companies based on what matters to them.

Owners - not just holders

Owning stocks directly also gives our clients a voice. We meet with company leaders, file shareholder proposals, and vote proxies on the issues our research identifies. What we learn from those conversations goes back into our investment decisions.

Our biennial Impact Report records our engagements, shareholder proposals and proxy votes, and quarterly updates track progress in between.
