Certified accountability in how we operate

Zevin is a Certified B Corporation (B Corp), an independent certification recognizing companies that meet B Lab's standards for social and environmental impact, accountability, and transparency.

Zevin has been a Certified B Corporation since 2014 and has an overall B Impact Score of 142.5*. A score of 80 is required to qualify for B Corp Certification. The median score for ordinary businesses is 50.9.**

What does B Corp Certification mean for Zevin?

It reflects our effort to apply to our own operations many of the principles of accountability, transparency, and responsible business practices that inform our investment approach.

Zevin is a sustainable investment manager. We evaluate companies on environmental, social, and governance practices. We engage with portfolio companies on climate risk, human rights, worker rights, corporate governance, and accountability.

B Corp Certification applies that same rigor to our own business operations. It involves third-party verification against B Lab's standards against five categories:

1. Governance — How we make decisions and serve stakeholders

2. Workers — How we compensate, develop, and protect employees

3. Community — How we contribute to the communities where we operate

4. Environment — How we minimize environmental impact

5. Customers — How we serve and communicate with clients

If we stop meeting standards, we lose certification. This external accountability provides independent validation of our commitment to applying rigorous social, environmental, and governance standards to our own operations.

How does Zevin put its values into practice?

B Corp Certification Recertification is not automatic. Our practices are regularly evaluated against B Lab standards. The certification process requires us to submit updated assessments, supporting documentation, and independent audits. We maintain standards or lose certification. That accountability is the point.

Is B Corp Certification the same as being a sustainable investment manager?

No. B Corp Certification evaluates how Zevin operates as a company. Being a sustainable investment manager - integrating ESG factors into portfolio decisions - is what Zevin does for clients. We chose B Corp Certification to hold ourselves to the same standards we apply to the companies we invest in.

Is B Corp Certification related to Zevin's investment performance?

No. B Corp Certification evaluates aspects of Zevin's business practices and social and environmental impact. It is separate from, and not a prediction of, investment performance.

Zevin's sustainable investing approach (ESG integration, active ownership, engagement) is designed to identify companies with strong governance and lower long-term risk. That approach may support returns over time, but certification doesn't measure that. What certification does measure: whether Zevin operates by the same standards we ask of portfolio companies.
