How We Invest
Since 1997, Zevin Asset Management has practiced active investment management with a singular focus: pursuing competitive long-term returns while seeking to mitigate downside risk during difficult markets. Our investment approach combines disciplined valuation, rigorous fundamental research, and active risk management to identify high-quality businesses capable of compounding value over time.
We evaluate economic conditions, company fundamentals, valuations, and long-term business risks to develop a fuller understanding of each investment's opportunities and vulnerabilities. Our portfolios are designed to participate when markets reward quality, while seeking to mitigate downside risk in more challenging environments. Our separately managed accounts are tailored to clients' financial objectives, risk tolerance, time horizon, and income needs.
Our Investment Philosophy
We believe that owning high-quality businesses and managing risk carefully is an effective approach to pursuing long-term investment success. We also believe that companies that are sustainably and responsibly managed for the long term are better positioned to prosper as excellent investments.
Our philosophy has remained consistent through changing market conditions: invest in strong, responsible businesses, remain disciplined about the price we pay, and consider the risks that could undermine long-term value.
Our Investment Principles
Three principles guide every decision we make:
Invest in Quality Businesses at the Right Price.
We seek industry-leading companies with durable competitive advantages, strong balance sheets, consistent cash generation, and management teams that allocate capital effectively. We believe investment outcomes depend not only on identifying strong businesses but also on paying disciplined prices for them.
Understand Risk Beyond Financial Statements.
Financial metrics tell only part of the story. Governance failures, labor disputes, regulatory scrutiny, climate exposure, and product safety issues can materially affect long-term value. We assess these factors as part of our overall evaluation of business quality and risk. This work reflects expertise developed over decades, not a process that can be outsourced or purchased off the shelf.
Challenge Conventional Thinking.
Thoughtful investment decisions benefit from questioning assumptions. Our investment team brings experience from major investment firms and perspectives shaped by different cultural and professional backgrounds. These perspectives help us challenge assumptions, question consensus views, and recognize risks and opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked.
Our process is designed to help limit losses in falling markets. Our emphasis on quality and downside protection may cause our portfolios to lag during periods when market returns are concentrated in a small group of high-momentum or speculative stocks. At the same time, we believe our approach may be particularly well suited to market environments that favor high-quality businesses with durable earnings, strong balance sheets, and reasonable valuations. We accept these cycles because our objective is not to lead in every market environment, but to deliver responsible and competitive long-term results across full market cycles.
Our Investment Process
-
We start broad.
We assess companies around the world, considering their financial strength, long-term prospects, and suitability for our quality-focused investment approach.
-
We focus on leaders.
We narrow our research to established businesses with durable competitive advantages, sound financial foundations, and the ability to manage long-term risks.
-
We research each company in depth.
We examine company finances, valuation, and business practices. Our financial projections help us assess future growth, potential risks, and attractive purchase and sale prices.
-
We integrate ESG factors into our analysis.
Environmental, social, and governance analysis is part of the same research process that examines a company’s competitive position, cash flows, and valuation. We use it to develop a more complete understanding of business quality, risk, and opportunity.
-
We understand what a business is worth.
Quality alone is not enough. We develop financial projections and estimate intrinsic value. We seek to invest when market prices offer an attractive relationship between potential return and risk. A great business purchased at the wrong valuation can produce disappointing results, while disciplined entry prices can improve long-term outcomes.
-
We decide together.
Our investment committee challenges assumptions, tests key risks, and debates each proposed investment before capital is committed. We consider the strength of the investment case, its risks, and the appropriate position size.
-
We stay engaged as owners.
We monitor each holding, trim positions, and sell when the investment case changes. As owners, we vote proxies, engage directly with company leadership, and file shareholder proposals when dialogue alone isn’t enough.
Why Independent Research Matters
Independent judgment is central to our investment process. While third-party research and data can be valuable inputs, we do not outsource investment conclusions.
We develop our own assessment of every holding through primary research and financial analysis and include information from people who see a company from the outside: workers and labor unions, community groups, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, policy researchers, academics, peer investors, and government filings. These sources can reveal concerns or opportunities that are not apparent through more conventional channels.
We also apply screening standards to avoid business activities and practices that do not meet our criteria, alongside any additional restrictions specified by clients.
Employee Ownership and Client Alignment
Our ownership supports this discipline. As a 100% employee-owned firm, we are all invested in the long-term success of the business, not quarterly growth targets imposed by external owners. This independence supports patient decision-making and alignment with clients' long-term interests.
